Reinvestments let your maturing treasury securities roll automatically into a new purchase of the same type and term. If you’d rather stay invested without placing a fresh order every time something matures, this is the setting you want. In TreasuryViewer, you configure it while placing the original order — not after the fact.
Setting up reinvestments at purchase
When buying a marketable security (Bills, Notes, Bonds, TIPS, or FRNs), the buy form has a Reinvestments option sitting inside the Additional Options section. Here’s how to get to it:
- Tap the Buy tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Choose the type of marketable security you want to buy.
- Enter your purchase amount and pick your auction from the Security picker.
- Tap Additional Options to expand that section.
- Tap Reinvestments — a pop-up will appear with your choices listed as radio buttons.
- For Bills, you can select a specific number of reinvestments. The available options depend on the bill’s term — a 4-week bill has more reinvestment slots available than a 26-week bill, since TreasuryDirect caps the total reinvestment window at roughly two years.
- For Notes, Bonds, TIPS, and FRNs, the choice is binary: Yes to reinvest once at maturity, or No.
- Pick the option you want and close the pop-up.
- Fill out the remaining fields (source of funds, registration, etc.) and tap Buy to submit the order.
When the security matures, TreasuryDirect will automatically put the proceeds into the next available security of the same type and term.
Changing reinvestments on something you already own
TreasuryViewer’s buy flow is the only place in the app where reinvestments get configured. There’s no separate screen for editing reinvestment settings on holdings you already have. For that, you’ll need to log in directly at treasurydirect.gov and use the ManageDirect tab.
Confirming the reinvestment setting on a pending order
To verify the reinvestment was recorded before your order settles:
- Tap the Buy tab, then tap Manage Orders in the top-right corner.
- Tap the pending order to open its detail view.
- Find the Number of Reinvestments row — it’ll show the count you selected, or 0 if you didn’t set any.
The order detail view is read-only, so this is for checking only.
There are two points in time when you can set up reinvestment for a maturing Treasury security on TreasuryDirect: when you first buy the security, or at some point before it matures.
At the Time of Purchase
The BuyDirect form includes a reinvestment section, so you can handle everything in one sitting.
- Log into your TreasuryDirect account.
- Click the BuyDirect tab at the top of the page.
- Pick the type of security you want, then click Submit.
- Under Registration Information, select a registration from the dropdown. If you don’t see the right one, click Add New Registration — once saved, the site will bring you back to the BuyDirect form automatically.
Note: Entity accounts are limited to one registration, which applies to all securities held in that account.
- Under Purchase Information, choose a security from the listed upcoming auctions and enter your purchase amount ($100 to $10,000,000, in $100 increments).
- Pick your funding source — either a linked bank account or your Zero-Percent C of I.
- Under Schedule Reinvestment, select Yes. If you’re buying a Treasury Bill, you’ll also enter how many times you want it reinvested.
How many reinvestments you can schedule for a Bill depends on its term, since there’s a 2-year rolling cap. A 4-week Bill can be reinvested up to 25 times; a 26-week Bill is capped at 3. For all other eligible Treasury marketable securities, you can schedule one reinvestment.
When the security matures, the proceeds roll automatically into the next available security of the same type and term.
After Your Purchase
If you didn’t set up reinvestment when you bought the security, you can still add it later — as long as the security hasn’t matured yet and doesn’t already have a reinvestment scheduled.
- Log into your TreasuryDirect account.
- Go to the ManageDirect tab.
- Click Schedule Reinvestments.
- Select the security type you want to reinvest and click Submit. You’ll see a list of eligible securities — ones that don’t already have reinvestments queued up.
- Select the security (or securities) you want to reinvest, enter the number of reinvestments, and click Submit.
- A confirmation message will appear once everything is registered.
Already have reinvestments scheduled but want to change the number? Go to ManageDirect and click Edit Reinvestments.
