How to Redeem a Zero-Percent C of I on TreasuryDirect

Help Home

Cashing out a Zero-Percent Certificate of Indebtedness (C of I) on TreasuryDirect is pretty painless. You can take out the whole balance or just part of it — here’s how the process works.

Getting to the Redemption Page

Log into your TreasuryDirect account and click the ManageDirect tab along the top. Look for the Manage My Securities section, then click Redeem securities.

Picking Your Security

The Redemption page lists the types of securities you can redeem. Select the radio button next to Zero-Percent C of I and click Submit.

Full or Partial — Your Call

On the Redemption Request page, you’ll choose how much to take out. A full redemption clears your entire C of I balance. A partial redemption lets you specify a dollar amount, leaving whatever’s left in place.

Once you’ve made your choice (and typed in an amount if you’re going partial), use the drop-down menu to select where the money should go, then hit Submit.

Double-Check Before You Finalize

The Redemption Review page gives you a chance to look everything over. If anything looks off, click Edit, fix it, and resubmit. When you’re happy with it, click Submit to complete the request.

You’ll land on a confirmation page after that — worth printing or saving it for your records.

When the Money Shows Up

Funds should reach your chosen destination within two business days of the redemption date.
