TreasuryDirect lets you share access to your securities with other account holders, but the system has a few rules worth knowing before you get started.
There are two access levels you can grant:
View rights do exactly what they sound like — the other person can see the security, nothing more. You can give View rights to any individual TreasuryDirect account holder, regardless of how the security is registered.
Transact rights are more powerful. Someone with Transact rights can transfer the security and change where maturity or interest payments get sent. There’s a catch, though: you can only grant Transact rights to the second-named registrant on a security, and only if that security uses Primary Owner registration.
A few other restrictions to keep in mind: beneficiaries on a Beneficiary registration can only ever receive View rights, and none of this applies to entity accounts. View and Transact rights are for individual accounts only.
After submitting, the page will show a confirmation with the granted rights and the recipient’s name. The grantee will also get an email letting them know access was given.
Go back to the Assign Rights Detail page for the security in question. Hit Edit to change the access level, or Delete to remove it entirely.
